An ailing woman who has lost her husband helps her younger caregiver find hers in this rama from Italy. Elderly Gemma (Ilaria Occhini) is in poor health and has found herself alone for the first time in years after the death of her husband. Gemma lives in Florence, while her son Enrico (Corso Salani) lives and works in Trieste; he can’t get out to see her as often as she’d like and he worries about her, so he hires Angela (Dorotheea Petre), a woman from Romania, to look after Gemma. At first, Gemma makes no secret of the fact she doesn’t trust Angela and would prefer that her son come to Florence and keep an eye on her; it doesn’t help that Gemma’s poor health makes her a difficult patient to look after. But in time Gemma develops a genuine respect for Angela and admires her close relationship with her husband Adrian (Vlad Ivanov), who is still in Romania but stays in touch with phone calls nearly every day. After Angela doesn’t hear from Adrian for two weeks, she’s convinced that something is wrong and she wants to go home; Gemma isn’t in a position to look after herself but she’s sympathetic to Angela’s dilemma, so Gemma joins Angela as she goes back to Romania in search of Adrian. Francesca is a young kindergarten teacher whose dream is to immigrate to Italy. Searching for a better life, Francesca is ready to overcome any obstacles, even the worries and the doubtfulness of the people closest to her. The plan is that her boyfriend, Mita, should join her in Italy as soon as he closes the small business he runs. Things take an unfortunate turn, painful truths come to light and priorities change.

On the Christmas Eve of 1914, in the Western Front in France in World War I, the Scottish, the German and the French troops have a moment of truce and share moments of peace and friendship. When the soprano Anna Sorensen succeeds in convincing the Prussian Prince to join her tenor husband Nikolaus Sprink to sing for the German high command, Sprink brings her to the front to sing for his comrades in the trench. The Scottish Lieutenant Gordon and the French Lieutenant Audebert have an informal and unauthorized meeting with the German Lieutenant Horstmayer and negotiate a truce for that night, and the priest Palmer celebrates a mass for the soldiers. When their superiors become aware of the event, they have to pay for the consequence of their acts.

It is out of season and the temporary employee Pierre of an amusement park seaside has all his savings stolen by the crook Simeon Guant, a friend of his girlfriend Kelly Phillips. Kelly is daughter of the owner of the park, Michael Philipps, who is married with Eileen Phillips. Eileen cheats her husband with Simeon, and they plot to kill Michael simulating a burglary and get his life insurance. Pierre, without any money, associates to the owner of a bar, the former thief Harry Barlow, who teaches him how to burglar. The reunion of these six characters has no happy ending.

Kurt Gerstein, a brilliant German scientist, is recruited into the SS during the opening years of the Second World War. Assigned as a sanitation engineer, Gerstein is sent to the Eastern Front to supervise water purification for the German Army. Soon after, however, he is asked to help with a “special project” involving fumigation of “vermin infested” areas behind the front lines. Gerstein develops Zyklon-B, a deadly chemical gas which Gerstein believes will be put to use killing rats, lice, and other disease carrying creatures. However, when Gerstein realizes that his invention will be used to kill not animals but people, he begins an emotional search of his Christian values and ultimately decides to betray the SS by attempting to expose the Holocaust by way of informing the Catholic Church.
