Nick “The Zone” Falzone is an air traffic controller at New York TRACON, where it’s busy 24 hours a day. He’s acknowledged as the best, until a quiet guy Russell Bell arrives on the scene from the Southwest somewhere. Russell and his wife Mary don’t quite fit into the close-knit community of controllers and their wives, and a rivalry soon builds.

Wigand è stato licenziato perchè dissente dalle politiche aziendali ed è convinto dal producer a testimoniare contro i suoi ex-padroni in una causa che dimostri il potere assuefativo della nicotina, cosa su cui si fondano le strategie di vendita delle aziende del tabacco. La CBS, proprietaria del network televisivo, decide all’ultimo momento di non trasmettere l’intervista, per timore di eventuali azioni legali da parte delle industrie del tabacco. Ma Bergman non si arrende e torna alla carica sulla carta stampata. Il caso finisce al Congresso americano che, nell’autunno del 1999, ratifica un accordo col quale i produttori di sigarette dovranno indennizzare gli stati che hanno fatto loro causa con la cifra di 246 miliardi di dollari. The Waterfront Crime Commission is about to hold public hearings on union crime and underworld infiltration. As workers are turned against each other, Terry Malloy inadvertently participates in the murder of fellow longshoreman Joey Doyle. On a hot summer afternoon, the First Savings Bank of Brooklyn is held up by Sonny and Sal, two down-and-out characters. Although the bank manager and female tellers agree not to interfere with the robbery, Sonny finds that there’s actually nothing much to steal, as most of the cash has been picked up for the day. Sonny then gets an unexpected phone call from Police Captain Moretti, who tells him the place is surrounded by the city’s entire police force. Having few options under the circumstances, Sonny nervously bargains with Moretti, demanding safe escort to the airport and a plane out of the country in return for the bank employees’ safety.
